The Cincinnati Reds have had their share of surprises in recent years. It seems that when you expect one thing with the Reds, you usually get something entirely different. Coming into the 2012 season, the Reds were among the favorites to win the NL Central and that still looks fairly accurate on paper despite some early struggles. How the Reds might get there, however, is looking rather different than anyone expected. As a huge fan of the Reds, I know I have been surprised by a number of things that have happened so far in 2012.

Throughout spring training, one of the big questions Reds fans pondered was whether or not pitcher Aroldis Chapman would earn a spot in the starting rotation. When manager Dusty Baker revealed his starting pitchers for the beginning of the season the question was answered – Chapman was not in it.

The Cincinnati Reds are showing signs of life and the timing could not be better. They have won three out of four games to climb back to 7-9 on the 2012 season. More importantly, they are headed back home to Cincinnati to begin a long home-stand. The next nine games will be played at Great American Ball Park and all three opponents should be beatable. The Reds can get this ship upright again if they get their heads together and take care of business at home.
