Free agent outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. and the Cincinnati Reds are close to a deal, a week after the New York Mets released the former All-Star. Matthews would likely get a minor league contract. He hit .190 with one RBI in 58 at-bats with the Mets. Cincinnati would be Matthews' eighth team. Reds manager Dusty Baker is close friends with Matthews' father, who also was an All-Star outfielder.

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez has pitched five sharp innings in his first Triple-A start since having Tommy John surgery last August. Volquez allowed one run on three hits over five innings for the Louisville Bats Wednesday. Ramon Hernandez wasn't surprised Cincinnati's offense went into a slump over the weekend. He wasn't shocked, either, when the Reds broke out in a big way in Oakland. Hernandez hit a tiebreaking home run leading off the 10th inning, Joey Votto and Scott Rolen added back-to-back shots and the Reds beat the Athletics 6-4 on Monday night.
